Currently, I am an MD-PhD student at the University of Alberta, in the Department of Surgery under the supervision of Dr. Darren Freed. My academic studies focus on applying ex-situ heart perfusion in the context of pediatric heart transplantation, as well as optimizing it for best performance through investigation of its unique pathophysiology.
My research interests are broad, spanning between clinical and academic contexts and across disciplines. My main research interests include mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation (organ preservation), pediatric cardiology, and pediatric and adult cardiac surgery: these are reminiscent of my long term career aspirations to become a surgeon-scientist.
Amongst other competitive awards and scholarships, I have been the recipient of Canada's top research personnel awards (CGS-M, CGRS-D), and have initiated, designed, and written operating grants that have resulted in my laboratory gaining nearly half a million dollars in research funding.
Since beginning this academic journey, I have learned alot, and have mentored many undergraduate students to get started in research as well as strengthen their professional school and scholarship applications. I started mitchellwagner.com in order to create a larger digital footprint and share my tips for academic success - thanks for stopping by!
